Farming

The Estate farms some land in hand and has one agricultural tenant, Fordham & Allen which runs its farming operation from Home Farm, Farleigh Wallop.

The farm land extends to some 3,000 acres of arable and grassland and is situated at 600 feet above sea level on predominantly heavy clay and clay cap, running down to some areas of chalky loam. Home Farm has a pedigree herd of dairy cattle, the Chalvington Holstein Friesians, consisting of 200 milking cows plus followers and beef steers. The dairy herd is loose housed and complete diet fed with a mixture of 2/3 grass and 1/3 maize and added individual straights.

The cropping is milling and feed wheat, malting barley, winter and spring oilseed rape spring beans, potatoes and other break crops.

Fordham and Allen are the only malting barley grower supplying the uber-trendy gin and vodka brand Bimber. Low-nitrogen barley grown on Farleigh Wallop downland farm fetches a distilling market premium and goes to produce English barley vodka.

His spring-sown barleys are malted in Wiltshire and transported to the four-year old Bimber distillery in London.
